Diane Belgrod

I am interested in the powerful undercurrent of the creative force, how it moves within us, how it reveals itself in our society, and how our relationship to it shapes the world we live in.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Paint The Mother Series (2022-2026)

As a woman, mother, and artist, I am seeking to address the struggles women face with isolation and connection, joy and fulfillment, representation, self-realization, and personal power. My current series, Paint The Mother (2022-present), explores these themes as well as the restrictions mothers still face in divisions of domestic labor, cultural expectations, in the art world, and in the power of motherhood at the threshold between representational and expressionistic painting, by channelling intuitive, vibrant, feminine energy onto larger canvases.

Becoming a mother gave me the greatest amount of perspective and empowerment I have ever known. I felt a deepened strength in my body for what it had achieved by developing, giving birth to and nourishing another human, all without my direct control or planning. By simply allowing my body to do what it knows how to do, I finally felt the most at ease with myself and the most full of my own power as a woman and as a person.

As a stay at home mother of two young children, my time for myself can be drastically limited. I have to be very deliberate in finding time for my own self-care, a connection to my community and a world outside of my home, my relationship with my partner, and painting in my home studio. This has forced me to become very purposeful in my art practice and very focused, present, and grateful for each minute I spend making work. Mothers have to be strong and compassionate, patient and loving, protective and determined. We are often left to figure many things out on our own, carrying an overwhelming mental load, while we privately drown in exhaustion, guilt, and isolation.

As women artists, specifically mothers, continue to fight for representation in the art world we are left with little time for art fairs or gallery openings. We are often, circumstantially, left out of the traditional realms where these connections happen. I am hopeful that my work will help align other artists and parents who are naturally isolated by circumstances so that we may find our way towards each other and build a nurturing community of support for each other.
